It was fun crossing this one off our bucket list. Riding the Madone has been a dream for years and it was almost perfect. Fortunately, the bikes we rented were a far better fit for both of us than the ones we rode on the Col du Tourmalet, so it was much more comfortable. The weather was fantastic and the views even better. The Madone is iconic because a lot pro cyclists use it as a test for their readiness for the Tour de France. To us it was about riding from the beach to over 3,000 feet high into the Alps with the Mediterranean in view the whole time. It was a totally unique experience. We took a wrong turn near the summit that led us into a classic French village, but otherwise the ride went off without a hitch. In fact, the village was so cool, it was worth a little extra mileage.
