Obituary for Dorothy Dappen Roggow Carter

Dorothy Jean Dappen Roggow Carter, daughter of George and Antonia (Tony) Dappen was born in Dawson, NE on October 22, 1937.  She passed away April 4, 2016 at home in Lehi, UT at the age of 78 from interstitial lung disease.

In her early years, she lived with her family on the old Ed Webel place north of Lucas, SD and attended a one room school house.  Years later Sunnyside School was moved into Burke, SD and attached to George and Tony’s home where Dorothy started her married life while her parents were living in Igloo, SD.  A fascinating tidbit—Dorothy’s school records were found in the old school building during the remodeling.

She married Francis (Shorty) Roggow on July 14, 1952 in Winner, SD.  From this union four daughters were born:  Marlene, Marsha, Mistie, and Michelle.  They lived in various towns on the west side of SD and the east side of WY while Shorty worked road construction.  They eventually settled in Rock Springs, WY  in 1965 where Dorothy lived for 46 years.
On November 29, 1987, she married James H. Carter in Rock Springs, WY where employment took them briefly to Magnolia, AK and Austin, NV and full circle back to Rock Springs, WY.  Their last anniversary was celebrating 28 years of marriage.

Anyone who knew Dorothy knew she loved, loved, loved treasure hunting or searching through yard sales or thrift stores.  She was a hard worker and highly motivated which she passed those disciplines on to her posterity.    She always enjoyed visiting with family and friends and she was willing to give a helping hand.   Anywhere she was employed, she took it seriously and did great work.  Various positions she held were waitress, cashier, sales person, teacher’s aide, demos, and owned a couple successful businesses.  To say she was deeply spiritual would be an understatement because she had a close relationship with God.  In Dorothy’s eyes, death is not the end but a new beginning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Tony Dappen and siblings: Sam Dappen, Elsie Neiman, and Gladys Klein; as well as, three daughters:  Marsha Roggow, Mistie Severson and Michelle Anderson.  She is survived by her husband, Jim Carter of Lehi, UT;  siblings Lois Jones of Garden Grove, CA and brother, Paul (Charlene) Dappen of Pharr, TX/Rapid City, SD;  and her oldest daughter, Marlene (Jerry) Brooks of Highland, UT.  She is also survived by six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.  The family is grateful and blessed for the years they had with Dorothy.
She chose to be cremated. A family celebration of her life was held April 9, 2016 in the home of Marlene and Jerry Brooks in Highland, UT.
